Jiao came to Endeavour Education Centre in 2018 and was completely new to the country. She didn't speak any English and as a result of this has had to rise to huge personal challenges as part of her arrival in a new city, a new country and with a new language. She was also extremely shy and generally kept herself to herself. She was supported with her English and provided with a variety of personal development opportunities such as conservation and cooking, and outdoor activities such as climbing and canoeing. Whilst these activities were enjoyable for Jiao, they were designed to be challenging to enable personal growth. This is especially difficult when you do not speak the language, Jiao had to put a great deal of trust into the staff. Jiao rose to the challenge and thrived, she tried everything, she worked hard at everything, and her attendance and punctuality were exemplary. Jiao also began to crack our complicated language. At the very end of the academic year, the Education Centre went on their annual trip to the seaside. Jiao had a fantastic day paddling in the sea, playing frisbee and interacting with the other young people. On the train ride home she played games such as naughts and crosses with some of the girls, and they started to try to learn a little bit of each others first languages. This was the first time she had fully interacted with her peers and it was a really lovely moment to be part of. Jiao can be proud of her progress and effort at Endeavour.
